U.S. Senate to Debate Partial Birth Abortion Ban
NJRTL learns vote could happen as early as the week of March 10th
New Jersey Right to Life has learned that debate on the
Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act (S.3) could begin in the U.S. Senate as
early March 10th with a vote following later in the week. The bill is
strongly endorsed by President Bush who cited it as one of his top
priorities in his State of the Union Address in January.
President Bush has called partial birth abortion an "abhorrent procedure that offends human dignity." The legislation would ban an abortion method in which a living baby is mostly delivered alive before being killed. It was twice vetoed by pro-abortion President Clinton.
A January Gallup poll found that 70% of the public favors the ban. Nevertheless, the bill still faces fierce opposition from Members of Congress with close ties to the abortion industry. It is possible that pro-abortion senators will attempt a filibuster to stall the bill from being voted on. An alternative measure could be introduced that New Jersey Right to Life and other Pro-Life leaders refer to as "the phony ban."
It is important that New Jersey Right to Life members contact Senators Corzine and Lautenberg and tell them to support the ban. NJRTL will continue to have the latest information on this breaking story as it develops.
